Ten reasons why I love Drew Barrymore
Today’s A to Z Challenge post is brought to you by the letter D! I know it’s kind of silly, but I’ve had a girl crush on Drew Barrymore for as long as I can remember. She’s only a year younger than me, and I’ve always admired her because she seems like a real person – she’s definitely had her ups and downs, and even though she’s Hollywood Royalty, she doesn’t take herself too seriously. She’s not afraid to be dorky or play real people in her movies, people who aren’t always beautiful and perfect. I don’t know – maybe I’m projecting my admiration onto someone without really knowing who they are, but from what I see, I’m proud to be a Drewbie! Here are only ten of the many reasons why I love Drew Barrymore:
- Drew is a great sport, and seems to be without the Hollywood snobbery that many movie stars are afflicted with. Watch My Date with Drew, a documentary produced by a guy with a huge crush on her, who has one goal: a date with Drew Barrymore.
- Drew is the godmother of Frances Bean Cobain, the daughter of the late Kurt Cobain and his wife Courtney Love.
- Drew is the youngest person to have ever hosted “Saturday Night Live”; she was only 7 years old at the time! She then went on to host SNL five more times.
- Drew (born Feb. 22, 1975) and I (born Feb. 25, 1974) are both Pisces, the best astrological sign to be.
- Drew doesn’t seem to care about being dorky, and even makes being dorky awesome.
- Battling world hunger has been an important cause for Drew in the last several years. In 2008, Drew donated $1 million to fund the Word Food Programme’s school food projects in Kenya.
- Drew is undoubtedly beautiful, but in many ways, she doesn’t embody the typical Hollywood beauty standard of being impossibly thin with perfect features. Yet she was crowned the No. 1 Most Beautiful in People Magazine’s annual “100 Most Beautiful People” list in April 2007.
- Drew’s struggles during her childhood were very public when it came to drinking, drugs, addiction, family instability, and recovery. She survived a lot of turmoil and came out on top, writing a book (“Little Girl Lost“) about her challenges at a young age, then continuing on to have a very successful career in film and directing with her own production company, Flower Films.
- Drew is an animal lover! She has been a strong supporter of the work of Southern California’s Wildlife Waystation.
- Perhaps the number one reason I love Drew Barrymore (even though this is listed as No. 10) is because she’s a fan of roller derby, as evidenced by the fact that she made her directorial debut with the movie “Whip It” and even did a lot of her own skating for the film!
and she is so knowledgable about classic film… she does a piece on TCM with R. Osbourne and its really good because she knows what shes talking about! She is one of my favs… great a to z
Yes! She really does know her stuff – it must be in her blood. Oh wait – it is! With a family history that can be traced back to the early days of film-making, Drew is poised to be an expert of the subject. Thanks for stopping by, Zoe! 😀
My favorite movie of her’s is Never Been Kissed. It’s just a fun, feel-good movie from beginning to end.
Oh, I LOVE that movie, too. That was the first movie that I went to see with a friend, and I loved it so much that I went to see it again by myself. She is just so genuine in that movie and doesn’t shy away from portraying someone who isn’t necessarily glamorous or “Hollywood beautiful”. Great film! 😀
Drew is uber cool. Loved the film Whip It! Great pick!!
Thanks, Ava! Whip it was great! I was impressed that she did her own skating, and made it look easy. Too fun! 🙂
I totally agree…Drew is awesome! Great pick!
Thanks! I’m glad you agree! 😉
Love her, love her, love her. And all her movies. She’s huggable, vulnerable, charming, tender and real.
Absolutely, Sammy! I have nearly all her movies on DVD – they help me feel better when I’m sick or down. She’s definitely one of my favorite actors! 🙂
Fun! I too love the fact that she’s not afraid to be dorky. I loved the movie she did with Hugh Grant–Words and Music, I think. It didn’t great reviews, but it was better than I thought it would be!
Ah yes – Music and Lyrics! That was such a great movie, too. Hugh Grant was charming in it, and Drew played a very real person with flaws and a history – loved it! 😀
I didn’t realize she did SNL when she was 7…. (back in the day when it was still funny) ha ha.. Thanks for sharing!
The Road We’ve Shared A to Z
Yes! I think she still holds the record for the youngest SNL host – which she did after her role on E.T. She was super cute and did a great job! Thanks for stopping by! 😀
E.T. is the first movie I saw in the theater as a squirmy little girl (my even-younger sister got in trouble for running up and down the aisles), and since Drew was about the same age as me, I was in such awe at her being in this magical movie. I’m so glad she was able to recover after her life hit a rough patch when she was so young. She does make being dorky cool – when I’m channel surfing I’ll stop every time when I run across Never Been Kissed.
Hope you’re having fun with the A to Z challenge,
Jocelyn
I think E.T. might have been one of the first movies I saw in the theater, too! I remember crying profusely when E.T. was taken by the government and was all deathly sick – so sad! And yes, I will always watch Never Been Kissed when it comes on…and Ever After also has that effect on me! I’ve seen that movie about a million times – Angelica Houston is amazing in her role as the evil stepmother. Thanks for stopping by – I’m having a great time seeing your fonts every day, too! 😀
She’s awesome! That second pic on the right cracked me up ha!
I know, right? She has a great sense of humor about herself…that was after some event she did and was criticized for not wearing a bra or something like that…I love that she doesn’t take herself too seriously and she’s not afraid to be herself! 😀
My first ever drive inn experience, it was the movie ET I really enjoyed sitting on the hood of the car with a blanket and popcorn. I loved when she dressed ET up. I respect Drew.
What a great memory! Drew is the best…I have a lot of fond memories of watching her movies (although when I was crying during E.T. my mom asked me if I wanted to leave because she thought I was too upset. But I hung in there and stuck it out for the happy ending!).
I cried miserably during the movie as well. Thank goodness the ended was happy.
I like the way she has sort of grown into herself. She never seems to be anybody else than Drew…quite unusual in Hollywood.
I totally agree – that’s a great way of putting it! She does seem to be very authentic – what you see is what you get. Thanks for stopping by! 😀
I always feel like she is the characters she plays…in a good way!
That’s the sign of a great actor! She’s very believable in the roles that she has taken on. I totally love her! 😉
I’m a ‘Drewbie’ too. She’s too beautiful.
Yay! Drewbies unite! 🙂
Agreed x10! Plus when a friend (against my wishes!) bothered her for an autograph for me at a Gits show- she was unbelievably gracious and kind. That photo of The Gits with “DB” on it is one of my most treasured possessions!
That’s awesome! I’ve always heard that she is super approachable and gracious – so glad you have that memento. Drew is awesome! 🙂
She’s great, but what’s up with that $1 donation? (point 6). Come on, Drew – you can do better than that! LOL
Ack! Thanks for finding that – it should be $1 MILLION (and you have to say it like Dr. Evil with your pinkie finger at your lips). I will fix that right now!
